Barr Lake State Park
I stopped outside of Denver at the Barr Lake State Park. Never heard of it before but I saw a sign and I followed it. I’m glad I did. Barr Lake is a good sized lake with a nature trail around it. I met with a ranger there who gave me advice on where to go to find the nest of the bald eagles who stay there. You can’t get close to the nesting site but they have a pretty good lookout area there. I got some shots of the eagles with their young chick but only having a 300mm lens, they look pretty small. I guess it’s a pretty common place for photographers. I saw several on the path and one of them had a 600mm lens with a 2x teleconverter. Nice.
On my way back the eagles flew pretty much right over my head. My camera was set up for pictures of the sunset, so it was either take a few seconds to adjust exposure and miss them, or shoot the way I had it and hope it was good enough. I chose the latter. The photos ended up about two stops underexposed. I was able to recover enough detail to be somewhat satisfied, but not enough to post them (okay, I did go ahead and post one). I did, however, pick up a decent shot of an owl on my way back. I stopped to look across the lake and admire the mountains and sunset. Looked up a little and an owl was perched right above my head.
